DC Comics As Painted By Norman Rockwell

I love these Norman Rockwell inspired Saturday Evening Post covers. They feature some of our favorite classic DC Comics heroes and villains. This art comes from DeviantArt user OnlyMilo a.k.a. Ruiz Burgos. Wonder Woman, Clark Kent, Zatanna, The Joker, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy all look right at home in the era portrayed on these covers.

I always love seeing these characters in new ways that are totally unexpected, yet realistic. They really come to life here in these classy vintage covers. Awesome work.

Starships Made From Junk Computer Parts

Etsy seller shankalonian loves taking old computer parts, especially hard drives, and creating amazing starships and other Sci-Fi vehicles. Below are some of the excellent models he has available in his shop.

You’ll see a lot of Star Trek ships like the Enterprise B, a Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica, the Babylon 5 space station, the Recognizer from Tron and more. I especially love the Enterprise B. shankalonian has a great eye for detail.

Doctor Who Short Story Collection Has Lovely Minimalist Covers

You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but when the covers are this good we just can’t help ourselves. Penguin Books is releasing an updated anthology for their Doctor Who short stories that are written by famous children’s authors. This new version is updated to include a story for Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.

But just look at those new minimalist covers for each book. It really is like having every doctor inside of that TARDIS slipcase. Take my money!

You’ll get stories written by Neil Gaiman, Malorie Blackman and Eoin Colfer. The new story for the Twelfth Doctor is Lights Out by Holly Black. There will be a normal edition of the collection that has all 12 stories in one book, but this gift edition is the one that has the awesome covers.

Thrift Store Paintings Get Geeky Makeovers

I’ve seen many artists who do “Piggyback Art”, but few hold my attention the way David Irvine of the Gnarled Branch does. He makes whimsical furniture, Gothic sculptures and what he calls “Re-Directed Paintings”. Irvine finds old or discarded thrift store paintings and brings them back to life, adding all kinds of geeky pop culture characters. Below are just a few examples.

He sells the paintings and prints on Etsy, Society 6 and Red Bubble. You can also see more of his artwork on his Facebook page. I love these pieces.

Adventure Time / Comic Book Mashups

Comic Book Resources recently held a new weekly mashup art collaboration titled The Line It Is Drawn. Their 142nd theme is all about Adventure Time! Here we get to see how Jake and Finn and the rest of the gang fit in with various comic books.

Below are some fantastic illustrations that mashup comic book superheroes and villains with characters from Adventure Time. I would love to see a new Adventure Time comic book like this every week. You can find the artists through the links below. This is just a sampling.

Star Trek: Voyager – Aeroshuttle Test Footage And Unused Voyager Designs

The Enterprise D had a Captain’s Yacht, and likewise Voyager had an Aeroshuttle. Although we never saw it on screen. It was a small craft attached to the underside of the USS Voyager’s saucer section. It was there the whole time. You can see it attached to the Saucer. It was just never used.

The Delta Flyer basically took over its role. Now we can see the launch sequence thanks to visual effects artist Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz who posted a concept test video of the Aeroshuttle launch. Star Trek designer Rick Sternbach has also been sharing some behind the scenes Voyager stuff lately. A LOT of it. This is because next year is the 20th anniversary of the series. Below you can see some concept art for the Aeroshuttle as well as some earlier concept art for Voyager herself and even a foamcore mockup.

John Carter Character Design And Concept Art

Michael Kutsche served as a character designer on the John Carter movie a few years back. The movie may not have been the success that Disney had hoped, but you certainly can’t blame it on the character and creature design. Kutsche did some amazing and out of this world work.

Check out some of the concept art from his Behance page. In some ways the creatures are even more alive in his art than they were on the screen.

Geeky WW2 Pinups

These retro illustrations come from Atomic Girl and depict several famous geek women as World War II pin up bombshells. They were inspired by the pinup art that pilots used to paint on the side of their fighter planes. Ironically, with an invisible jet, Wonder Woman is her own plane pinup art.

Here we have Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Molotov Cocktease and Slave Leia. They look great on the side of a plane or even on T-shirts for that matter. Hopefully she will add more geek women to the lineup. I would love to see Batgirl and some of the Marvel X-Girls as well.

Doctor Who: Postcards in Time and Space

Postcards from the edge…Of time and space. What if you could visit some of Doctor Who’s locations and then send postcards back home to your friends and family? If you could, they would hopefully be as beautiful as these Doctor Who inspired postcards.

These lovely works of art come from the combined forces of Behance users Megan Lara and Harry Gordon. I think I’ll give Skaro a pass and visit Gallifrey and Midnight.
