By now you’ve seen Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi movie The Martian. It looks like it might be one of the year’s best films, but would you expect anything less from Ridley Scott?
Well, check out this new mashup from YouTuber Tony D. It has audio from The Martian trailer mixed with video from Pixar’s WALL-E. The second video is a shot by shot comparison with The Martian’s real trailer. They did an excellent job on this one.
The original Star Trek TV series was a pop culture phenomenon. Almost everything about it is iconic. In fact, it is amazing that the stars aligned to create such a show that would endure. Now a new Kickstarter campaign is underway in order to create minimal art based on the show.
It is called Minimal Trek, and these minimal posters and postcards are as amazing as the original Star Trek itself. They may be minimal, but they are awesome. They are created by graphic designer Mark Gonyea, who made one for all 79 episodes. He wants to make a 5X7 postcard for each season, an 18X24 poster for each season, and a limited edition 18X24 poster with the images from all three seasons. Hit the link to help fund it.

At last we can pre-order the Ralph McQuarrie Stormtrooper Statue. Without Ralph McQuarrie’s conceptual drawings and paintings, Star Wars would have been a completely different experience. His vision helped to shape the world that George Lucas had created. This awesome Stormtrooper was inspired by Ralph McQuarrie’s pre-production artwork for Star Wars: A New Hope.
This 1:5th scale soldier of the Empire looks amazing. He has several display options: carrying a shield in one hand while wielding a lightsaber or blaster in the other, and he also has distinctive helmets and armor that more closely resembled fighter pilot gear than the final costumes seen in the film. McQuarrie’s Stormtrooper design comes to life at last in statue form.

Visual effects artist Doug Drexler recently uploaded this cool demo reel from BSG: Blood and Chrome, showing off the before and after of the CG ship interiors. What strikes me most is just how little the actors had to work with on set. Most of the shots shown here are almost entirely green screen with very few real world objects. It all came together impressively in the end.

Ian Milward knows how to throw a wedding. It took him several weeks to build this Stargate for his wedding. And you know what? It turned out awesome. This Stargate ring measures 12-feet in diameter and is nicely detailed with constellations and working LEDs. It is so good it looks like it belongs on the show.
It is very appropriate since the couple first met working at the same hardware store, and connected because of the show. They were inspired by the episode where Jack and Sam get married in front of a gate. So they made it happen.
