Call me crazy, but I love both of the old V The Visitors mini-series. One of the aspects I loved were the Visitor’s weapons. You can actually buy a kit and paint the weapon yourself. It even comes with that clear acrylic rod for the center piece. Presumably where it focuses it’s power and creates the pew, pew, pew laser.
