Disney Cruise Ship Gets A Star Wars Upgrade

disney star wars cruise 2

Disney Cruise Line has announced that they will be making some modifications to a ship, and those modifications include an epic “Star Wars” area. The ship is called Disney Dream and will let young Star Wars fans aboard the Millennium Falcon in a play zone inspired by the interiors of Han Solo’s ship. You can sit in the cockpit and pilot the Falcon through hyperspace to jump to light speed. Basically every kids dream. I wish they had stuff like this when I was a kid.

The Jedi Training Academy experience will also be coming to the ship. There are also lots of Star Wars games, activities and crafts as well as screenings of “Star Wars Rebels.”

DIY Cardboard Millennium Falcon

cardboard star wars millenium falcon
This cardboard Millennium Falcon is a pretty impressive creation. If you have a few hundred cardboard boxes laying around, you might want to build one of your own. Although I doubt it will be as amazingly detailed as Imgur user Thomas Richner‘s creation.

It is a 5ft. long scale model made almost entirely of cardboard, except for a bit of balsa wood along the hull. If that isn’t enough, it even has retractable landing gear and a detachable radar dish. It took Thomas 140 hours of work and as far as I’m concerned it was totally worth it. This thing is amazing. He even took a few shots against a green screen and it actually looks like it belongs in the movies.

Two Special Feature Clips From The Star Wars Digital Release

This news is what many fans have been waiting for. A few days ago, Lucasfilm announced that they will be releasing the entire Star Wars saga on digital HD with some brand new bonus features. These special features focus on interviews with people involved with the making of the movies and the more typical behind-the-scenes features.

Here are two new clips. A conversation with set decorator Roger Christian and effects technician (now director) Joe Johnston about the making of the Millennium Falcon. Then we have one focusing on the color of Han’s Hoth jacket. I had no idea there was even a controversy regarding the color of his jacket. I think they might be having a bit of fun with that one.

Engraved Glass Millennium Falcon And Death Star

These aren’t new, but they are so shiny and lovely that I had to share. Apparently only 40 of these engraved Millennium Falcon and Death Stars were produced to celebrate Disney taking over Lucasfilm. They were gifts for people who helped make the deal happen.

Each Millennium Falcon took six to seven hours to complete. The level of detail is pretty stunning. This is one of those “Holy grail” collectibles that most of us will never have a chance at owning.

Stunning Paper Model Of The Millennium Falcon

Sometimes you look at a paper model and it’s easy to admire the fine craftsmanship, and sometimes an artist takes things to a whole new level and you are just blown away. This Millennium Falcon is made almost entirely out of paper. It’s 99% paper and 1% LED lights and fiber optics on the interior. Basically it is a masterpiece of paper engineering and design.

It took Polish artist Bernard Szukiel four years to complete it using photos as reference. His devotion is as inspiring as the finished product. No detail has been missed. It has the LEDs and fiber optics inside, even the scratches on the paint are accurate. Bernard you are a true master craftsman!

The Millennium Falcon’s Hyperdrive Malfunction SFX

Have you ever wondered how the ‘comical’ sounds that accompanied the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive malfunction, were created? Wonder no more. This video has Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt explaining the process in this 1980 clip.

That guy has a super awesome and fun job. It might surprise you to know just where some of those sounds came from and how they were put together.

Spaceship Skeletal Surveys: The Anatomy Of Sci-Fi Starships

Kansas City, Missouri artist Josh Ln has a fun and creative anatomical illustration series of famous spaceships from science fiction. The series is titled Spaceship Skeletal Surveys and features ships from SciFi films and TV shows. Now you can see what they would look like if they had a skeletal structure.

We have the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars, the Enterprise from Star Trek, the TARDIS from Doctor Who, Firefly and a viper from Battlestar Galactica, all showing off their anatomy. You can order prints and all kinds of apparel with these five designs printed on them from Josh’s Society6 store.

Polygon Art: Superhero Cars And Other Famous Vehicles

As cool as most Superheroes are, sometimes their vehicles come off as one-dimensional. That isn’t the case with Josh Ln’s polygonal art. Josh has created famous polygonal cars (and other vehicles) that look absolutely out of this world.

Any Superhero would be proud to drive one of his creations. Here we see the Batmobile, the Turtle Van, even the Millennium Falcon and Back To The Future’s DeLorean, all created out of polygons. The end result are amazing rides that equal more than the sum of their parts.
