I love vintage sci-fi T-Shirt art. There’s nothing like it in the world. So I had to share just some of the amazing retro sci-fi T-shirts that Zuul’s Stash sells. They have all kinds of T-shirts for well known and obscure movies, video games Tv shows and more. These designs really take me back and make me wish I had all of my old T-shirts from when I was a kid.
Flash! Ahhh ahhhh! Savior of the universe. All of these years later, I still love that song. And you know what? Cheesy as the 1980s Flash Gordon movie was, it will always have a special place in my heart. That’s why I am excited that Flash Gordon Pop! Vinyl Figures are coming. You can pre-order them now and they will ship in June.
70s and 80s Sci-Fi was a very special thing. We had a wide array of adventures to choose from in that era. If you love Sci-Fi from that era like I do, check out these Classic Sci-Fi Posters by Boiling Point Creative. Each individual poster is sized 16″ x 24″ and they really capture the essence of each movie well. You can choose from BattleStar Galactica, Black Hole, V, Buck Rogers and more. I’m really kinda in love with all of them.
The 70s were a strange time. Don’t believe me? Just have a look at this 1978 commercial for Rainier Beer that pays homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars and Flash Gordon. It even stars the original Flash, Buster Crabbe, as “Fresh Gordon.” It’s pretty wild. They basically ripped off everything they could and put it all into one commercial.
Wow. This hand-drawn animated short resurrects the Flash Gordon serials from way back when. Flash…ah ah. He saved every one of us! Yeah, before that. This short was made by veteran Disney animator Robb Pratt who just loves to work on this stuff all the time, just because he loves it. It keeps him up at night.
It has period appropriate music and other nice touches that make it feel like the old serials have come to life again. Even a scantily clad damsel in distress. Dale Arden of course. Flash and Dr. Hans Zarkov are taken to the planet Mongo and forced to fight an alien creature in an arena. Enjoy.
The 1980 Flash Gordon movie was something else. Something crazy and special. You really had to be there and see it during that time. It had all kinds of weird visuals and it was all varying levels of over-the-top fun. Plus, a Queen soundtrack. You can never go wrong with a Queen soundtrack.
Designer Chris Foss created designs for the Hawkmen’s rocket sled that Flash rides, which weren’t used in the film. These are some really trippy designs. Most of them seem way better than what was used on screen.
Dino De Laurentiis called me when Flash Gordon was almost ready to go into production and asked me to come and see them in the studios because he wanted new versions of some of the designs that had already been done, which he obviously didn’t like. And, specifically, he wanted me to redesign the ‘Space Scooter.’
I saw Dino De Laurentiis, he gave me a verbal brief. I was then taken down to the department that was physically building the stuff and we discussed what this thing was supposed to do in the film. And I then went away and, over a long holiday, produced the designs for it.
