Star Trek: Voyager – Aeroshuttle Test Footage And Unused Voyager Designs

The Enterprise D had a Captain’s Yacht, and likewise Voyager had an Aeroshuttle. Although we never saw it on screen. It was a small craft attached to the underside of the USS Voyager’s saucer section. It was there the whole time. You can see it attached to the Saucer. It was just never used.

The Delta Flyer basically took over its role. Now we can see the launch sequence thanks to visual effects artist Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz who posted a concept test video of the Aeroshuttle launch. Star Trek designer Rick Sternbach has also been sharing some behind the scenes Voyager stuff lately. A LOT of it. This is because next year is the 20th anniversary of the series. Below you can see some concept art for the Aeroshuttle as well as some earlier concept art for Voyager herself and even a foamcore mockup.

John Carter Character Design And Concept Art

Michael Kutsche served as a character designer on the John Carter movie a few years back. The movie may not have been the success that Disney had hoped, but you certainly can’t blame it on the character and creature design. Kutsche did some amazing and out of this world work.

Check out some of the concept art from his Behance page. In some ways the creatures are even more alive in his art than they were on the screen.

Concept Art From Bryan Singer’s 2001 Battlestar Galactica

Before Ronald D. Moore brought Battlestar Galactica back to life, Bryan Singer almost beat him by a few years. Singer had his new Battlestar Galactica series in development around 2000-2001, but due to the 9/11 tragedy everything stalled and it was sadly never meant to be.

It would have been interesting to see what Singer’s take on the franchise would have been like. We may never be able to see everything, but luckily, we can get some idea, thanks to some concept art that recently appeared online. We can see a more streamlined Viper, some interior sketches of the Galactica and some bulky Cylon designs that look menacing and tough. The art seen here was created by designer Guy Hendrix Dyas. That Viper has some nice curves. Makes me wonder what Galactica herself would have looked like.

Concept Art From David Lynch’s Dune

Many consider David Lynch’s Dune to be a messy adaptation of the books, others see it as a visual masterpiece. It is dark, epic and sprawling. And if you watch it enough times, you’ll see that it is carefully painted in layers, with a depth that you won’t find in most Sci-Fi movies. Is it good film? That’s up to you and your own experience with it. It IS a work of art in it’s own right however. I loved the sheer alien-ness of the film back in 1984. It was all just large and foreign and new to my eyes in the way that Star Wars had been years before.

Author Ron Miller was the production illustrator for the film, and has a large collection of sketches, production paintings, and photos of spacecrafts and sandworms and much more. Here we can glimpse a bit of that collection in some concept art and behind the scenes photos.

Concept Art For The Forbidden Planet Remake That Never Happened

You may not be aware, but back in 1995, Irvin Kershner tried to make a remake of Forbidden Planet. Sadly, the project never happened, but Ralph McQuarrie, John Eaves, Mark McCreery, Syd Mead, and Stan Winston were already doing some work on it. We can take a look at McQuarrie and Mead’s work here.

The McQuarrie concept art has immense sets where the humans are like ants and the Mead art shows off the technology that we would have seen. From what we can see here, this would have been quite the epic. We can only dream about how amazing this stuff would have looked on screen.

Cloud Atlas Concept Art Explores More Of Neo Seoul

It has been about two years since Cloud Atlas was released in theaters. Many came away from the film not sure what to think about it, some felt it was just uneven, while others thought it was a masterpiece. Well, whatever you thought of the film as a whole, you have to admit that it was ambitious.

Visually, the best part was probably the future world of Neo Seoul in 2144. These are the scenes that blew me away. Here you can see artist Adam Kuczek’s concept art for Neo Seoul, including weapons and vehicles. You can see why it looked so good on screen.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Concept Art

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes will be hitting theaters next week, so we are all eager to see more of this world after the first installment. You might say we are going ape over it. To satisfy our Simian craving until then, we have some concept art from this movie as well as Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

These fantastic images come from a new art book that chronicles the design of both movies. It is titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: The Art of the Films. The book is full of the production photography and concept art behind both films. It is a must buy for hardcore fans of the movies.

Creepy Creature Concept Art From Maleficent

Artist Bryan Wynia has revealed some stunning creature concept art for Disney’s fantasy movie Maleficent. You have to love the level of detail that can be seen here.

At first glance you don’t know if you are looking at a model or art, but you do know that these creatures are intense and in your face. These creatures are alive and breathing before your eyes. Make sure that you check out the creatures featurette as well, to see them all in action.

Concept Art And CGI Footage From Ron Howard’s Dark Tower Movie

Conceptual illustrator, Gregory Hill has updated his website with some stunning concept art that he created for Ron Howard and Universal’s cancelled film based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. The plan was for Howard to make three movies and at least a television mini-series or two, but sadly Universal passed, due to financial concerns.

It looks like we will not get to see this beautiful world(worlds) come to life anytime soon, which is extra sad after seeing this concept art that seems to capture the spirit of the books so well. Now I want to see Roland and the gang on screen more than ever.

If you haven’t seen Edge of Tomorrow, what are you waiting for? The concept art is every bit as good as the movie. We know this because concept artist Kevin Jenkins just released a whole mess of Edge of Tomorrow concept art.
