The Great Sandworm Race: We Have Wormsign

Now here is an epic mash-up that you don’t see everyday. Artist and illustrator Stephen Andrade painted this awesome masterpiece showing the giant worms from Tremors, Beetlejuice and Dune all taking part in The Great Sandworm Race. My money is on the Dune worm. It will just eat the rest of them. It is a worm eat worm world my friends.

And if that isn’t amazing enough, there’s more. He also created a digital version that looks like a vintage pulp book cover, making me wish I could read that issue. All hail Shai-Hulud.

Star Trek The Original Series Overview Infographic

This factual Star Trek infographic will teach you all kinds of cool things about Star Trek The Original Series. Artist Anna Kerbo gives you all kinds of interesting trivia, like the percentage of crew member deaths sorted by uniform color for instance. Can you guess which uniform had the most deaths? I think you can.

There are facts about the crew members, facts about the U.S.S. Enterprise’s specs and much more. It is a handy chart that will help settle some nerd arguments or just get new fans up to speed. Did you know that McCoy says, “He’s dead, Jim!” at least 14 times in TOS?

Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy Cosplay: Ivy & Harley’s Night Out

This super fun and sexy Gotham photo shoot was done by Saffels Photography and stars Traci Hines as Poison Ivy, Angi Viper as Harley Quinn and Brandon Hillock as Batman. It is aptly titled “Ivy & Harley’s Night Out”. And as you can see, it was quite a night. Not so great for Batman, but the girls had a blast.

This dynamic duo basically has the Bat all wrapped up and ready to present to “Mister J”. The rest of the night was just gloating and having fun. I love the colors. Plus, I’m a sucker for red-haired women who like gardening.

Star Wars Terrariums Are Tiny Windows Into A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Artist Tony Larson recreates amazingly beautiful Star Wars scenes in terrarium form. All of your favorites are here: Yoda, R2-D2, Luke on his Tauntaun, and Ewoks. These tiny scenes are alive and you can’t help but feel that you are looking through a window into a galaxy far, far away.

The Yoda and Ewok scenes especially feel authentic. I don’t know how much time he puts into each piece, but he has a fantastic eye for detail. The good news for all of us is that you can buy them from his Etsy Store, starting at around $95.

A Collection Of Famous Robot Heads

Daniel Nyari put together these awesome illustrations of famous robot heads. How many can you identify? If you are on this site and reading, I am expecting some good scores. You should be able to identity at least 90% of these if you are a true Sci-Fi geek.

Even the Woody Allen robot from Sleeper makes an appearance. If robots really are taking over the world(And we know that they are), we could use more illustrations like this to keep them identified. These heads look great. I would love to see the rest of the robots done in the same style.

Dad Photoshops Daughter Into Sci-Fi and Fantasy Films

This guys gets the coolest dad ever prize. Grant Davis decided to Photoshop his daughter Winter into his favorite movies. You can see Winter co-starring in such movies as X-Men (as baby Magneto), Space Jam, Harry Potter, Die Hard, and more. Winter is going to have these images for her whole life, reminding her what a cool dad she has.

I’m sure that he will be adding even more soon. The question is, which movie will Winter show up in next? We will have to wait and see. One thing is for sure. Winter is coming!

Creating Empire Strikes Back’s AT-AT Scenes

Joe Johnston recently revealed this behind-the-scenes video detailing the making of one of the shots from Empire Strikes Back featuring the AT-ATs. I have nothing but respect for these old school stop motion guys. It is slow work and about as low-tech as it gets, but it can produce amazing shots that rival today’s special effects.

Johnston:

Original Trilogy fans…here’s the digitized super 8mm clip of Phil Tippett, Jon Berg and Doug Bestwick stop-motion animating a snow walker shot from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. As I watch this for the first time in thirty-five years I am truly amazed at the amount of work that went into the creation of just one shot in this iconic sequence. I love stop motion with all it’s archaic flaws and charm. This is a great example of what will hopefully not become a lost art form.

I remember changing the frame rate a couple of times before switching to live action. In the later settings it’s easier to see the walkers’ progress. The VistaVision camera recording the shot is the large black shape at bottom center, which gives you a hint as to which shot in the sequence the guys are animating. Watch the cut sequence…it’s pretty obvious which shot this is. The video camera on the stand to the left of it is for the animators’ reference monitor.

I had forgotten that there’s a short snippet of Mike Pangrazio painting one of his incredible panoramic landscapes that formed the backgrounds for the majority of the stop-motion shots. There’s even a brief shot of a very focused Nilo Rodis at the end. This was a blast from the past for me and I hope you all enjoy it. Thanks for watching!

If you enjoyed Neil Blomkamp’s 2009 sci-fi masterpiece District 9, you will get a kick out of this District 9 theatrical trailer recreated in paper. It is sure to put a smile on your face and make your day. It’s like the creators of South Park have sweded the movie.

This humorous and very well done parody trailer is the work of Tim Kent. Great work Tim.

Polygon Art: Superhero Cars And Other Famous Vehicles

As cool as most Superheroes are, sometimes their vehicles come off as one-dimensional. That isn’t the case with Josh Ln’s polygonal art. Josh has created famous polygonal cars (and other vehicles) that look absolutely out of this world.

Any Superhero would be proud to drive one of his creations. Here we see the Batmobile, the Turtle Van, even the Millennium Falcon and Back To The Future’s DeLorean, all created out of polygons. The end result are amazing rides that equal more than the sum of their parts.
